Zoe Drummond: Soprano

Australian Zoe Drummond is a gifted young soprano, whose reputation as an artist of unique excellence has been celebrated and acknowledged worldwide.

Zoe began 2021 by recording the title role of Juliana by Joseph Phibbs with Nova Music and Resonus Classics. She returned to Garsington Opera in their production of Der Rosenkavalier, performing the Noble Orphan and covering Sophie. This stunning production was featured on Opera Vision, BBC Radio 3 and BBC Sounds. Zoe then made her role and company debut singing Woglinde in The RhineGold with Birmingham Opera Company, before returning to Scottish Opera to sing Fiametta in The Gondoliers and Phylla in Utopia Limited

Zoe first joined Scottish Opera in 2020 for a national tour of Spring Opera Highlights, and then covered Despina in Cosi fan tutte and Lucy in the film of The Telephone for the Edinburgh International Festival. She also performed Despina with Waterperry Opera Festival, one of the first live productions in the UK after lockdown. 

Zoe made her international operatic debut with the English National Opera in 2019, where she understudied and performed the role of Papagena in The Magic Flute. She then went on to perform Clorinda in La Cenerentola with West Green House Opera, Giulietta in I Capuletti e i Montecchi with Bloomsbury Opera, and was an Alvarez Young Artist with Garsington Opera in Don Giovanni

Zoe made her Opera Australia debut in The Eighth Wonder as principal roles: Clare Goldring, Architects Daughter, and Socialite. The production received rave reviews, and she was said to have portrayed multiple characters with ‘impressive ease’. Zoe then stepped into the starring role of Giroflé/Girofla in a comedic pastiche operetta: Two Weddings, One Bride. Zoe was applauded for her ‘bright and attractive soprano‘ through seasons at the Sydney Opera House (2017) and at the Arts Centre Melbourne (2019). 

Zoe is a recent graduate of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, completing a Masters in Music Performance (Opera) with Distinction and a Concert Recital Diploma for exceptional performance. While at the Guildhall Opera School, she performed the roles of Tytania in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Despina in Così fan tutte and Susan in A Dinner Engagement to excellent reviews. Zoe holds a Bachelor of Music Performance with First Class Honours from The Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where she was awarded many prizes for musical and academic excellence. 

Zoe is deeply honoured to have been awarded many of Australia’s most prestigious awards. In 2018, Zoe won the IFAC Handa Australian Singing Competition, taking away the Marianne Mathy Scholarship. Her performance was described as ‘technically refined…sung with commendable control and shimmering tone’. In 2016, Zoe was the winner of The Opera Foundation for Young Australians Lady Fairfax New York Scholarship, standing out for her ‘emotional connection to raise a tear in the eyes of the audience‘. She was a Melba Opera Trust Scholar from 2015-2017, during which she was awarded the Sydney Opera House Opera Award. Zoe was also awarded the 2018 Australian Music Foundation Award, a 2020 Covid Competition grant and the 2019 JSRB Foundation Award from the Joan Sutherland/ Richard Bonynge Bel Canto Competition, and second prize in the 2016 Mietta Song Competition.

Recognised for her versatility, Zoe has performed extensively as a classical cross-over artist. She has been engaged to sing at corporate events for SBS World Movies, the Australian Paralympic Tri- Nations Opening Ceremony, the Australian Supreme Court, and TedX:London. Zoe appeared regularly with The Seven Sopranos: gracing fashion festivals in Singapore and China, appearing on Australian television broadcasts, sailing around Asia and the South Pacific on cruise ships, and recording the album ‘Popcorn: Songs from Stage and Screen’, available on iTunes. 

Zoe is also an experienced concert performer, having appeared with chamber ensembles and orchestras all over Australia. Concert works include Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Gounod’s St Cecilia Mass, Rossini’s Messe Solennelle, Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem, Mozart’s Exsultate Jubilate, Haydn’s Theresa Mass, Mahler’s 4th Symphony, Handel’s Messiah and Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb.

Additionally, Zoe is an established singing teacher, having worked for over 8 years privately and at schools. Other qualifications include a Certificate IV in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, an International IELTS Teacher Training Certificate, Certificate II in Performing Arts (Dance) and Certificate III in Music Industry.
