Puccini in Paris

Opera Caledonia is delighted to present “Puccini in Paris” on Friday 10th June (7.30pm) at the Institut Français d’Écosse, Edinburgh – an evening of vocal and instrumental music centred around operas set in France or composed by French composers.

We are delighted to welcome to Scotland the fantastic Italian conductor and pianist Maestro Leonardo Catalanotto (described by Zubin Mehta who he regularly assists in Florence as “having great experience in his work”) to perform alongside Scottish based Soprano Rachael Brimley and Hungarian Violinist Tamás Fejes, Assistant Leader of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. 

The programme will feature “Quando m’en vo”, “Sì, mi chiamano Mimì” & “Donde lieta uscì” from Puccini’s La bohème • “Chi il bel sogno” from Puccini’s La rondine • “Sempre libera” from Verdi’s La traviata • Micaela’s Aria from Bizet’s Carmen • “Intermezzo” from Puccini’s Manon Lescaut • “Intermezzo” from Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur • “Meditation” from Massenet’s Thaïs • “Dance of the blessed spirits” from Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice • Emile Cousin’s “Fantasie Elegante: Il barbiere di Siviglia” • Sarasate’s “Faust Fantasy” on Themes from Gounod’s Faust amongst other items. The Music of Sir Walter Scott

Opera Caledonia is delighted to present “The Music of Sir Walter Scott” on Saturday 19th March (7.30pm) at St. Vincent’s Chapel, Edinburgh – a classical recital exploring the life and works of Sir Walter Scott through the operas he inspired.

Join international, award-winning baritone Arshak Kuzikyan (English Touring Opera, Grange Park Opera) and pianist Derek Clark (Head of Music at Scottish Opera) as they perform the music of Donizetti, Marschner and Schubert amongst others. Presented with support from The Edinburgh Sir Walter Scott Club, the evening will include spoken word and readings alongside the music performed.

Come & Sing - Music of the Opera

Do you enjoy singing? Fancy rehearsing and performing chorus numbers from some of the world’s most loved operas? If you answered yes to either question, Opera Caledonia’s “Come & Sing – Music of the Opera” day at St. Vincent’s Chapel, Edinburgh on Saturday 12th March is just the thing for you!

Join conductor Susannah Wapshott (Chorus Master at Scottish Opera) for an exciting and enjoyable day (10.30am – 5.00pm) of music making for adult singers of all ages and abilities (music reading required). Rehearse and explore the operatic chorus repertoire in an encouraging, fun and relaxed environment before performing for family and friends in a closing concert. All music will be provided in advance (so no sight singing on the day to lose sleep over!)

Enjoy humming along to Puccini’s sumptuous Humming Chorus from “Madama Butterfly” and blow away the cobwebs from your pipes for Verdi’s glorious Anvil Chorus from “Il trovatore” amongst other operatic highlights.

Behind the Curtain

Hosted by Derek Clark, Head of Music at Scottish Opera, “Behind the Curtain” will go behind the scenes and explore opera’s great masterpieces alongside virtual and live performances from soprano and Opera Caledonia patron Anush Hovhannisyan with pianist Sergey Rybin, baritone David Stout with pianist Susannah Wapshott and violinist Tamás Fejes (Assistant Leader, Royal Scottish National Orchestra) with pianist Derek Clark. This event will feature music from Gluck’s “Orfeo ed Euridice”, Wagner’s “Tannhäuser”, Massenet’s “Herodiade” & “Thaïs”, Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana”, Mozarts’ “Don Giovanni” and Rossini’s “Il barbiere di Siviglia”.
